Joe Giglio Trio 3 Spirits
“Three Spirits” by Joe Giglio, is the result of a musical collaboration with violinist Rob Thomas (String Trio of New York) and bassist Ron McClure (Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Wes Montgomery, etc). This is the first time all three of them performed in a trio and it is a swinging, lyrical affair. No drums - lots of latitude for soloing, and plenty of rhythmic support from bassist McClure. Standards and some of Giglio’s masterful originals are presented. The opener is “107 West” named after the restaurant where Joe holds court each Friday, usually in the setting of a guitar duo. Joe creates exciting music for ‘upper westsiders’, almost always the guitar player guest is a giant in reputation as well. One of the secrets to Joe’s versatility and universal appeal is his constant challenging of himself to improve and these duets are part of that.
My favorite is “My Romance” a beautiful rendition of the Rogers and
Hart standard. Here is Joe’s singing, and great guitar playing
behind Rob’s violin. “Another Fall, Another Spring,” a Giglio original, is a wonderful bop tune played with a swinging lilting easy rhythm.
Another sensitive piece by Joe Giglio, “Addio...for Jim Fisch”,(whom we lost last year to cancer), punctuates Joe’s compositional ability. This is great jazz. The violin is a great surprise -wonderful swing and bebop. They work together so well.
This is an entertaining CD that will have your foot tapping and bring a smile to your face. So, Joe’s work goes on “to the promise of each new day,” in his own words.
After these pleasing CDs I am excited to think of what tomorrow will bring. It has got to be good
